The IJVG Skills programs have been developed in partnership with the Australian DBT Institute and the Indigenous Joint Venture Group. The program was developed following extensive consultation with Indigenous leaders, Indigenous Elders and informed by the evidence based Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Applications of the IJVG Skills to date have included elite sporting clubs that have included the St.Kilda FC, Melbourne Storm ARL Club, and most recently the Fitzroy Stars FC. The IJVG Skills program is designed to be delivered to various populations including primary school and secondary school students as well as adults.
IJVG Skills Program Outline
To our knowledge there is no program that currently brings together all the skills to address, in an evidence based manner, a range of concerns including: stigma and racism; trans-generational trauma; emotion dysregulation; mental health concerns; addiction; tolerating distress; maintaining important relationships; and focus on the present moment with an eye on the future.
The IJVG addresses for core concepts and ways of address a wide range of life concerns encouraging participants to be Present, Resilient, Connected and Balanced!
The IJVG Skill program Modules:
Present – Taking Hold of Your Mind by Becoming Mindful!
- Goal: To be in control of your mind rather than having your mind in control of you
- Skills Taught: Using a CLEAR MIND; What Skills in Being Present; How Skills in Being Present
Resilient – Tolerating Painful Feelings and Urges During Life’s Ups & Downs
- Goal: Develop strategies to move away from acting impulsively when feeling overwhelmed during stressful times in your life
- Skills Taught: Pros & Cons; Taking Stock; IMPROVE THE MOMENT
Connected – Connecting with others to enhance relationships and get what you want in life
- Goal: Develop strategies to develop, maintain and enhance relationships while still maintaining self-respect and meeting your own needs.
- Skills Taught: BARA Skills; DIR MUN Skills; FAST Skills
Balanced – Making Safe Balanced Decisions & Being Aware of Challenges
- Goal: Develop strategies and approaches to make balanced decisions whilst being aware of distractions and challenges!
- Skills Taught: Skills for Health & Wellbeing Literacy; Skills for Making Decisions; Skills for Leading a Healthy Lifestyle
